There are few Salary position for the automotive techs out there. Most of us are commission which means, if no one comes into your shop. You don't get paid. I don't know of any shops that actually pay hourly. I can't speak for the independant shops. But the dealerships, most of the ones around me are flag rate or commission. Flag Rate is how many hours you do times what your hourly pay is. But if you do not flag any hours, you do not get paid. Flag Rate is a simple way for the shop not to pay the lazy people or cover their own butt is they can't get anyone into the shop for repairs.
