It actually has a couple of functions. One is it is a dryer. In fact, many call it a "dryer receiver. " To understand it's main function you have to know a little bit about how AC works. Simply put, the refrigerant will be either in a gaseous state or liquid state during different functions. It also must be compressed to be able to work properly. Liquid does not compress, but gas will compress. The accumulator is in the system to hold excess liquid so that refrigerant is not "dumped " in liquid form into the compressor. That would damage the compressor.

IT also traps and holds any moisture in the system by means of an internal desiccant bag.Any major A/ C work needs to be accompanied by a new accumulator or the manufacture of any other involved parts, say a new compressor, will NOT honor the warranty
