Sounds like the Torque converter is locking up. Some TC's have a lock feature built in. In top gear at cruising speed the TC will lock-up (By an electrical solenoid) this design increases fuel economy by reducing normally occuring slippage. When you come off the gas (and dont apply the brake) the lock-up feature uses the engine to slow the vehicle (much like a Jake works on big Tractor Trailers). Do you have a tach or RPM Guage? Get er up to cruising speed, notice the tach, take foot off gas but not on brake, Does the tach go to idle speed or does it drop just a little. If it just drops a little, then the engine is dragging on the transmission. Touch the brake for 2 secs. does the tach go to idle? if so, you have released the TC lockup (By pressing on the brake) if the brake releases the tach to idle, then you have a lock-up TC and you never knew it. If braking doesnt release the lockup then your TC may be faulty, or a brake might be dragging, check the hubs for excessive heat after running a few miles. if one is significantly hotter than the others, the brake may not be fully releasing |
