For a car that is owed out right (not financed) You only need liability insurance.

To be legal, just liability with minimal coverage, however, if you ever need to use it you could lose in the end. going cheap just to be legal is not the best way to go, figure what you can reasonably afford and and try to get substantial coverage for both parties. full coverage with a 100-300-100 policy is ideal but more costly.
